He'd never seen his CALL device go dark since he'd gotten it. Of course the screen did sometimes, when he hadn't used it for a while (though that wasn't common since he practically lived on the thing) but the little light in the corner...

He'd also never cared for the fact that he couldn't find a power button but when the screen stayed dark, when nothing he could do made it turn on, when he actually burned the wrist off of his shirt with a burst of frustrated heat vision...

He had to admit defeat. And he had to... get on with his life.

The days seemed empty for a little while, a few weeks, but he was luckily in the last couple of years of his high school career, which meant that there was plenty of things to do and plenty of people to deal with and, as it turned out, a few more powers to learn how to handle. And it would be easy to say that he forgot about the device, that he gave up on it, that the whole thing faded away.

But it didn't. It couldn't. He couldn't forget the aliens, the people, the islands. He couldn't forget Giorno and Dave and Steve. He wouldn't. He refused. Instead, he stubbornly checked the device once a week, putting it back in the drawer as it invariably disappointed him.

Until one day, when he managed to win a free trip...
